Starting as a  life drawing and finished later in my studio. The problem I had with this pose was how hard it was to too hold, so we had to start – stop – start – stop for the entire time. This girl was beautiful. A student and dancer who came up with this stunning ‘breaking free’ pose.

When I got back to my studio, I completed the image with solid stone columns behind her to emphasise the ‘breaking away’ element and the light source in front to create direction. My aim was to enhance this sense of ‘movement toward freedom’ by locking my model to weight and burden and then contrasting that with clear light direction and the feeling of movement towards it. I separated the character and the stone pillars by adding the cape to describe the movement and enhanced it with colour contrast.

This painting is one of the series of ‘Petes Art’ paintings that are representative of my desire to describe and translate individual elements of my images. To represent a character using colour to express unseen things like attitude or emotion or use multiple objects to form another linking the entire image to a single story. The extra and most important dimension in art – the imagination.
