I’m a self taught artist living in Queensland Australia. My preferred mediums are oils, pastels and pencil illustration. The subjects vary and are a mixture of Australian birds, life drawings and my favourite, fantasy art.
I love to paint in oils. Just the smell of the studio is enough to draw me in. I’m hooked. The medium seems to suit my personal style and over the years has let me experiment with colour and texture in ways I haven’t found in any other. I have tried many styles I have seen online, but always end up coming back to my own. It would be fair to call me an oil painter.
However for me, pastels are the fastest way to produce a colour work particularly if its in a live environment. Life drawing in pastels (pencils and blocks) gives me the colour I need to express and experiment with the models mood and style. It also allows a professional completion of the images at a later date.
As an illustrator, technical accuracy is a must. I get great enjoyment out of researching the subjects, finding the correct details of the times they are set in, the machines and their places in that time. If you get it wrong, there’s always someone who will let you know. My style in illustration is ‘old hat’. Perspective – structure – fill and shade using technique and pencil grades – finish.
Digital tech is also a brilliant drawing tool. I use a Wacom tablet and draw directly into the computer in photoshop to produce a great deal of images, mostly for commercial use. Fast and forgiving, digital art is as open to style and expression as the other mediums but texture is ‘illustrated’ instead of produced with technique. Its a great medium. I have no fear in its development and I have learned over the years to see it as a tool in the hands of the artist rather than many who see it as the artist itself. They will be disappointed until they see how a real artist uses it.
Over the last 20 years, I have entered some competitions although I would have liked to have entered more. I just never get around to it or miss the deadlines. Selling and promoting myself is not something I’m very good at. I cant remember the dates however, I’ve have been lucky to win:
Winner – Peoples Choice Award – ‘The Beerwah Choir’
Second in Show – Open Division – ‘Wedge Tail Portrait’
First Prize – Pastels Division – ‘Butterfly Lady’
Highly Commended – Open Division – ‘Kookaburras View’
First in Show / First in Medium – Open Division – ‘Mother’
First in Show – Airbrush Muraling – As an apprentice (No photo available)
For over 20 years I have reproduced my work in a range of commercial products including stickers, table mat sets and canvas art prints. I have also worked in art fields including as an illustrator and cartoonist. Being a professional artist in Australia requires a mixture of traditional and commercial applications. I am in the fortunate position of making my living from my hobby but I have learned that requires a mixture of self interested and commercially viable subjects and applications.
It’s not all ‘your way’, but that’s cool too.
